So at last the day has arrived. We are ready to kick off our Epic Cape Road Trip. It is 06:00 and we are finishing off brekkie. Our first day will take us to Kimberley. Our objective is to go and see the Big Hole. The trip from Jozi is approximately 475km. We took the “Kimberly” turnoff instead of taking Google maps advise to take the Bloemfoentein route. This was definitely the road less traveled. There was a stretch of road between Hertzogdrif and Boshof that was terrible but the scenery made up for it.
Once we arrived at our destination we quickly checked in and then headed off to the “Big Hole”. A long walk way took us to the 30×30 Cape ft (not sure what the difference between a Cape foot and a normal foot is but this is the same size as the claims that were sold) lookout point.
After viewing real diamonds in the vault and reading up about the history of the mine we went to explore the historic town. Apparently these were the original buildings in the surrounds that were relocated to the Big Hole to create the town.
Lastly we could not miss the opportunity to visit the oldest pub in Kimberly, The Star of the West. This pub was originated in 1870. The bar was built out of wood recovered from a ship wreck. Jason our friendly barman, gave us a little tour of the establishment. Upstairs is used for private parties. Jason showed us the room where the notorious “Diamond Lady” would entertain the gentlemen of the late 1800’s, early 1900’s.
Back at our comfortable guest house (Oleander) that evening we enjoyed a scrumptious meal before heading to bed.
